What is a Public Adjuster?
In Texas, a public insurance adjuster is licensed by the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) to provide insurance policy adjustment services, and settlement claim advocacy for insurance policyholders. A public adjuster is required to be bonded, fingerprinted, pass a state exam, have a criminal/background check, and submit an application for license approval by the TDI. A public adjuster only represents policyholders, never the insurance companies. The fee charged for services is regulated by the Texas Insurance Code, and public adjusters charge a contingent fee based upon the success of settlements that result from the work performed. The Disaster Advocates does not charge a fee for any claim checks received prior to our contract date. We charge only for insurance checks attributed to our success as your advocate. No recovery, no fee.
In reality, when an insurance company handles both sides of a financial transaction, the chances for delay and underpayment to the policyholder are high. The insurance company’s interests lie in making a higher profit by paying less on Texas insurance claims – even when you have a right to the money. It is important for policyholders to know that they can hire a licensed public adjuster to assist in their Texas insurance claim process. Unfortunately, very few disaster survivors know what a public insurance adjuster does. When policyholders hire a Texas certified and licensed public adjuster, they can rest assured that the public adjuster has the policyholder’s interests in mind – we work for the policyholder, not the insurance company. Insurance companies have in-house adjusters working for them to represent their needs. Shouldn’t you have an adjuster working for you? When working with a Texas public adjuster, a policyholder will, typically, receive a fairer payout on their settlement claim. Why? A public insurance adjuster has the experience to know what is covered by the policy, and what is owed under the policy when a claim occurs. They speak the same “language” as the insurance company which evens the playing field.
